Big Hill Great Ocean Road Guesthouse
The Geat Ocean Road Trust opened up a subdivision of 140 allotments name the “Big Hill Estate” in 1924 to raise funds for the continue construction of the road. A guesthouse called “Iluka” was built on the new road, but burned down in 1926. ILuka was a guest house well known to patrons from all over the state, was completely destroyed by a fire which broke out about 11.50pm on Monday night on 8th December 1926.
The guest house was conducted by Mrs Campbell. The house provided accommodation for 34 guests, and such accommodation was completely booked right to the end of January at the time of the fire. Mrs Campbell, sleeping on the verandah, barely had time to escape before the flames reached her. Practically nothing was saved from the flames with only outbuildings saved.
Iluka was built by Mr Morley M.L.A. It occupied a commanding situation above Grassy Creek near the Ocean Road Toll House. From its wide verandah a magnificent view of the coastline was obtainable. Originally it was used by Mr Morley as a seaside residence where he dispensed hospitality to his numerous Parliamentary and other friends. On January 11th 1924 members of the Great Ocean Road Trust had lunch at Mr Morleys house “Iluka” on Big Hill.
