Wymbooliel, State School No 3018, opened in 1890 with Head Teacher Thomas Fraser 1890-92; enrolment was 25 children and average attendance of 14. The school, situated 7 miles off the Lorne-Colac Road West of Benwerrin, was known locally as Flannigan’s School as it had been built of split palings with a shingle roof, by Flannigan and leased by the Department. Other Head Teachers were Ethel Gruber 1900 and John McInnes 1902. Though Departmental records state that the school closed in 1904, a child, James Henderson, was admitted to the Lorne School 22nd of April 1907, a note in the Lorne register indicating that he was the last pupil of State School Wymbooliel.
