Marine Café

The Marine Café was the forerunner to Chris’s Restaurant at 144 Mountjoy Parade. In Facebook post in c2026 Helen Johnston remembers that the Marine was owned by Bonnie and Bill Whitechurch and had fond memories of ‘Whiting’ and ‘Dusty Road’ ice cream dessert. Whitechurch’s was the ‘go to’ place for breakfast for members of the Surf Club before patrol and surfers. [John Agar Committee for Lorne for Lorne page in the Surf Coast Times, 26 December 2025] Bonnie Whitechurch (Esme Beatrice Whitechurch) was mother of Peter and Elizabeth (Libby). [Herald Sun, 3 July 2008].

Chris’s Restaurant

A young Greek man, Christos Talihminidis, new to Lorne in 1972, bought the Marine Café from Mrs Whitechurch. He then opened the pink-painted Chris’s Restaurant at 144 Mountjoy Parade. Chris’s roasted potatoes will go down in the annals of Lorne and the Surf Coast as a stand-out culinary triumph. The restaurant was demolished in 1985 to make way for the Cumberland Resort.
