The Flower Patch

In 1934 Joyce and Cleve Herbert started a tea rooms at Flower Patch (24 Charles Street), serving devonshire teas, coffee and biscuits; also fresh fruit salad and cream. The strawberries were grown on the property.

Flower Patch continued for 12 months then moved to the building behind (since demolished), from which the tea rooms operated. The Herbert’s continued with the tea rooms till approximately 1938-39 when the Clarkson family rented the building and continued the business for 12 months. After this time the Herbert’s closed the business down.

The property behind Flower Patch was extended with living quarters and Flower Patch was rented out. The Herbert’s also built Lavender Cottage (20 Charles Street) which was also rented out.
