Development of 106-112 Mountjoy Parade

About 1996, developers Jack and Cynthia Wynhoven bought the site between 106 and 112 Mountjoy Parade. They worked with architect Ron Billard (Billard Leece Partnership) to retain the ‘Lorne Village’ feel, asking for a row of shops, and apartments above, which would be presented as separate entities. The design ensured the facade of the old butcher shop was preserved. Mrs Wynhoven said she had put an enormous amount of thought and effort into creating a holiday apartments that people would want to rent again and again. Local artist Peter Day turned the beautiful Baltic pine flooring from the old butcher’s residence into large dining tables for the apartments. Lorne local resident Doug Stirling said he estimated the original butcher shop would have been built in the early 1880’s. He said the shop was built by Ham Dorman who ran it before selling it to people named Parish. Mr Stirling said Bill and Jim Dorman then took over the shop from the Parish’s, before later selling it to Jack and Toby Alsop. The Alsop brothers were followed by Noel Challis. Mr Stirling said various others leased it from Mr Challis. Lorne historian Malcolm Graham said the original butcher shop was not situated directly on the main street. He said it was back a bit from the footpath. Mr Graham said the original building did not have a verandah, that was an addition made by the Alsop brothers.
