This is the familiar story of someone coming annually to Lorne for holidays, falling in love with the environment then one day, on their reluctant return to Melbourne asking themselves why not move down permanently.

In 1989 this is exactly what Angela did. Investigating job opportunities in the town, her timing turned out to be spot on because the new Cumberland was missing someone with her payroll and accounts experience. She was offered the position and 27 years later she is still there!

After a year she met her husband Kevin Van Deuren (at the Lorne Hotel). After five years he was commuting to Lorne on weekends while Angela was working in Lorne so they bought a house half way, in Geelong. They had their children, two beautiful girls, sold Geelong and in 2004 rebuilt their house in Lorne to live in permanently.

Angela’s bookkeeping skills have been valued  by various local organisations and businesses including Secretary of the the Aquatic Club, working with the Bowls Club, The Lions Village, Smyths Real Estate as well as helping out a few of the tradesmen in town. Angela assists in co-ordinating Netball for the Lorne Football/Netball Club.

Although Angela loves living by the water she hasn’t been in it for 15 years. The closest she gets to it is having a husband who is president of the Surf Club. She has been known at odd times to exhibit some Irish dancing skills due to her Irish ancestry.

Angela loves to travel and will be heading to Ireland to visit relatives later in the year.

Angela Quinn was born in Doveton at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges and grew up in Mooroolbark where she went to school and then later in Ringwood at Aquila’s Girls College. Her parents were Irish Immigrants from Galway and Leitrim. Her Father arrived in W.A. on the £10 policy in 1950 but her mother didn’t want to come but love overcame her reluctance and she arrived 3 ears later. They were married straight away where she didn’t know anyone not even her bridesmaids.

Ange left school at the age of 15 and got a job as a mail clerk at Nilsen Electrical Industries where she worked for 6 years.

She saved hard and in 1980 went on a 2 year adventure to Europe and the USA with her sister Mairin sponging off as many relatives as they could. They had a wonderful time seeing the world back in the good old days.

When Ange returned her old employer found out she was back and offered her the old job back which she accepted and stayed there for a couple of years.

Over the next few ears she had a few different jobs mainly in the clerical side of things. She started holidaying in Lorne and fell in love with the place returning as much as possible.

As the new Cumberland resort was nearing completion, Ange decided she wanted to live in Lorne permanently so she applied for a job there. She got the job but they told her she had to start straight away which was a problem because that didn’t allow her to give a weeks notice to her old boss.

They worked out a solution by her starting her new job and then going back and finalising things at her old job. The Cumberland was about 6 months away from opening so things were hectic and the living quarters they gave Ange was under an old house in Polwarth Road which was dark, damp, cold and full of spiders.

She hated it but decided to give it a crack for at least 12 months. 30 years later she is still in Lorne and like a lot of us, wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

After an old friend Judy Scanlon moved to Lorne to join her they rented a house at 1 George St which soon became Lorne’s number one party house.

One night at the Lorne Pub a big dopey looking bloke called Kevin Van Dueren who was playing footy for Lorne tried to chat Ange up but gave a very poor first impression so things didn’t start well.

Eventually he grew on her and after about 5 years they snuck off and got married.

Daughter Alice came along and they bought a holiday house at 18

Grove Rd in partnership with another couple.

In 1998 Bridget was born and they were all living happily in Geelong with Ange running the office at Mantzaris Fish Mongers and Kev was driving a fuel tanker for Mobil.

When Kev’s job became redundant they bought the other couple out of their Lorne House which they demolished and rebuilt and all moved to Lorne to live permanently. They are still there to this day.

Ange is now a freelance book keeper doing the books for several businesses and clubs including our club. She has also been our club secretary for several years.

Ange is a very popular and respected member of our community and an integral part of the LAAC.
